Common Web Design Mistakes and How to Fix Them

Alex Schupp • July 15, 2025

At Crowd Digital Marketing, we’ve worked with businesses and organizations across industries who come to us with one big question: “Why isn’t my website bringing in leads, calls, or sales?” More often than not, it’s not because their services are lacking—it’s because their website is.

Here are some of the most common web design issues that could be costing you conversions—and what to do about them:

Slow Load Times

If your website takes more than a few seconds to load, you’re losing visitors. People are impatient online—and so is Google. A slow site can impact both your search rankings and your user experience.

How to fix it:

  • Optimize image sizes and file formats
  • Use performance-focused hosting
  • Minimize unnecessary plugins and scripts
  • Enable caching and compression

Weak or Confusing CTAs

If users can’t figure out what you want them to do, they won’t do anything. A great CTA (call-to-action) should be clear, specific, and easy to find.

How to fix it:

  • Use action-oriented language: “Schedule Your Free Consultation,” not “Submit”
  • Make buttons stand out visually
  • Place CTAs in logical places throughout your content
  • Test different versions to see what performs best

Outdated or Unprofessional Design

First impressions matter. An outdated website can make your business seem less credible or trustworthy—even if your service is top-notch.

How to fix it:

  • Refresh your branding and layout to reflect your current offerings
  • Choose a modern, mobile-friendly design
  • Avoid clutter and focus on clean, intuitive layouts
  • Invest in quality visuals that represent your brand well

Not Mobile-Optimized

More than half of all web traffic comes from mobile devices. If your site isn’t responsive, you’re missing out on conversions from people browsing on phones and tablets.

How to fix it:

  • Use a mobile-first design approach
  • Test your site on multiple screen sizes
  • Simplify navigation for smaller devices
  • Ensure forms and buttons are touch-friendly

Don't Let Your Website Be the Weak Link

Your website should be working for you—not against you. If you’re not seeing the conversions you expect, it may be time to take a closer look at how your site is built, designed, and optimized.

Most people imagine a digital marketing agency as a place where social posts get created, ads get launched, and reports get sent out at the end of the month. The reality is far less simple—and a lot more strategic. Behind the scenes, agencies are constantly analyzing data, adjusting campaigns, and making decisions in real time to improve performance and drive measurable growth.

Search engine optimization is often misunderstood. Many businesses assume that adding a few keywords to their homepage or publishing an occasional blog post is enough to improve rankings. When traffic does not increase, they conclude that SEO simply does not work for their industry. In reality, most SEO challenges stem from structural issues, inconsistent strategy, or incomplete implementation rather than a lack of opportunity. If your SEO efforts are not producing results, the solution is rarely more content alone. It starts with addressing the foundation.

When businesses think about redesigning their website, the first word that usually comes to mind is “refresh.” New colors. Updated fonts. Modern layout. But a high-performing website redesign is not about aesthetics. It is about performance. A strong website should generate leads, drive sales, improve search visibility, simplify content management, and clearly communicate your brand. If it only looks better but does not function better, it is not a redesign. It is decoration.

You’re getting traffic. People are clicking your ads. They’re finding you on Google. They’re even browsing your pages. But the leads? The calls? The form submissions? Crickets. If your website isn’t converting, the problem usually isn’t traffic. It’s what happens after someone lands on your site. Here’s where to start.
